About Private Label

Every day we buy lots of products online or in the store under one or another brand, but we don't actually think that a half or even more of them are manufactured by another company or brand. And this is what a private label stands for. A private label product is manufactured by a contract or a third-party manufacturer and sold under a retailer's brand name. Brands that are owned and marketed by producers are commonly referred to as national brands or manufacturer brands.

According to the Private Label Manufacturers Association, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom are leading the private label market and stand at or above 50% of all products sold. The days when consumers associated private-label brands as something akin to cheap or low quality are gone completely.

If you, as a business owner, have considered offering a line of private-labeled merchandise, it would be useful to know more about the pros and cons. Some of the biggest advantages of private label products include a control over production, pricing, profitability, branding and adaptability. The main disadvantage is a manufacturer dependency, as production of your product line is in the hands of a third-party manufacturer.
